Alton Eugene Applewhite is a visual artist, a painter, who is based in the Southern United States. His interest in art began during his early adolescent years and was encouraged by his parents. He never pursued art during his university years, but it would still be a pursuit he would keep returning to in his life. In 2023, Alton immersed himself in art again after almost an almost ten-year hiatus. Upon returning to an art practice, his tastes in art would shift 180 degrees.

“If I had to describe my artistic style, the best description would be non-representational abstract. For most of my life, I hated and misunderstood that kind of art. The passage of time and an open mind can open the doors of wisdom and understanding though. For now, it’s difficult to imagine creating anything but what I’m doing now.

My art is about creating a purely visual experience. I don’t inject emotions or any specific meaning or message into my art. I leave the meaning up to each viewer. My process is very intuitive with little to no planning. I listen to my instincts and let the process unfold with trust that the painting will unfold as it’s supposed to. This requires trust in your intuition and learning to quiet the harsh, inner critic. The process sounds mad, but it has allowed me to produce a body of work that I’m satisfied with.”
